Love Your Kitchen (don’t hate your counter!)

Email

Here’s a common problem: you have a decent kitchen, maybe even updated appliances, but you just don’t like your counters. I know I’ve been there. Speckled Formica countertops circa 1999 were the eyesore of my own kitchen for a while. Sometimes, though, it’s not possible (or within your budget) to give your kitchen such a facelift. No problem! We’ve got some ideas for loving your kitchen, no matter what the counter.

Our reader asks for some advice in matching/dealing with her “hideous green countertops.” Ok, these countertops really aren’t all that hideous, so don’t be so down on your kitchen! In fact, if accented correctly, you’ll realize that this green can act like a neutral. Here’s the kitchen now:

In a simple move, we can paint the entire kitchen a deep, lush brown. Now we are drawn into the back wall of the kitchen, not to the green counters. And the small details keep this kitchen fresh: clean up the top of the cabinets with some simple wheat grass and accent the doors with pretty wrought iron knobs and pulls.

Painting is great, but you know how much I love a good backsplash. For added kitchen drama, try some tiles instead of paint. I’m partial to the Brio Blends from Modwalls, like this in Windy City.

As I was looking at this kitchen, I started to think. Maybe it’s not the counter that’s the problem here. Maybe it’s the cabinets! I know that cabinets are  a huge project, but the result can be stunning. For example, everything looks fresher and cleaner when painted white. And notice how lovely those door pulls look. I still like the wall a deep brown to contrast with the white cabinets.

If painting is too much of a hassle, here’s one last and simple solution. Remove your cabinet doors. I’ve done this in many rental apartments and it gives your kitchen an instant update. You just have to be diligent about keeping your shelves neat. The wall is painted a light warm gray. Look how neutral and lovely this kitchen suddenly feels. I’m too busy admiring the baskets to notice the green counters.

I think we’ve shown that there’s hope for any kitchen. Whether it’s a counter you don’t like or a cabinet that doesn’t match, you don’t have to engage in heavy construction to give your kitchen a lift. So go on, love your kitchen!
