Finding Inspiration: Home Decor in India

Email

Greetings from India! We are taking a brief vacation far away from our New York City home. And while I won’t be able to post any new makeovers until we return, I am finding lots of inspiration in this lovely land.

I love many things about India, but when it comes to home decor, I am most impressed with three things:

  1. India is not afraid of color (for both interiors and exteriors)
  2. India is not afraid of pattern and even likes to mix several patterns.
  3. India is not afraid to mix old/new, modern/traditional, east/west.

Just check out a few of my favorite products and stores here in India and you will see what I mean (and hopefully be inspired yourself!)

These are from a textile company called D’Decor, which sells its products around the world. They are even endorsed by the legendary Shah Rukh Khan.

Check out the deep gray walls, with wall and trim painted in the same color. Sexy!

Pattern isn’t at all intimidating when you keep the color palette monochromatic and low-contrast.

Inspiration from India just wouldn’t be complete without some rich, silky saffron. It’s very tasteful when paired with warm gray.

One of my favorite shops for both clothing and home accessories is Fab India. Not only are their products amazing, but they also promote sustainable development by linking “over 40,000 craft based rural producers to modern urban markets.” They even ship many of their products internationally!

India also has a great sense of the dramatic. It’s not always practical, but it’s certainly inspirational. Here are few final images from the store House of Ishatvam in New Delhi.

I highly recommend a trip to India, but if you can’t make it this far just bring a little bit of India into your own home with some new bold colors, a touch of pattern or a bit of the dramatic.
