Paint Your Fireplace for a Fresh Look

Email

A fireplace feature takes over any room as a focal point. It’s important to style it with intention and to keep it current. Fireplace finishes range from classic wooden mantels to stark modern stone and tile to simple brick.

Here’s a plain brick fireplace from a reader. I love the clean lines and the way it’s tucked neatly between the shelves. It’s cozy and uncluttered. However, the red brick is a little bland against the wood of the floor, the wood of the shelves and the brown of the wall. Everything feels like the same color.

Abstract Addition with White Brick

Big, eye-catching artwork and fireplace mantels are a match made in heaven. It’s the perfect place to showcase art and add color, pattern and texture to the room. The easiest way to brighten and freshen this fireplace is to paint it white. It’s clean and crisp and helps define the mantel and bookshelves. The mantel is stained a darker brown and the fire place framed with matching trim. A blue-gray wall helps cool the warm woods and the whole thing is tied together with a big colorful canvas.

High Contrast Flower Power

In order to keep a warm color scheme, this room needs some high contrast to add a little drama. And there’s nothing better than white, dark and a simple punch of red. Note the two-tone fireplace with a dark brown base. It keeps the brick interesting and makes the ledge feel more like a bench than a bulky built-in. This room is elegant and friendly.

Eclectic Family Retreat

How about a tiled fireplace instead of paint? If you are up for some DIY or have extra budget, it’s easy to dress up this brick with some fresh new tile. White tile with mosaic accents is fun and adds subtle color to the space. Pick up some of the tile colors in the wall paint and in the custom art.
