Red Hot and Boyishly Handsome (Part 1)
Sounds like a bedroom made for hanging out! This is a fun request from a family redecorating their teenage son’s bedroom. Teen rooms are challenging, but rewarding. You have to balance the (sometimes strong) design opinions of your teen with an adult sensibility.
My mom was a great design advisor when I was a teenager. She supported (and was often the source of) some crazy creativity and was always on-hand painting wall murals, sewing throw pillows and rearranging furniture. I have fond memories of a mural depicting a Roman street scene, faux fur bed throws and many a mosquito net and canopy (not all in the same room, of course!)
The key to decorating a teen’s room is to let him or her be a part of the design process. And so, our readers’ son has asked for a room that is painted entirely red. They are open to red, but are unsure that it will work on all four walls (must be some of that adult sensibility). Check out the room as it is:
Full Red
As requested, let’s see what this room looks like in all red. I think it’s a little intense, especially for a place to sleep. However, I can appreciate the bold gesture, which is why I included the psychedelic window treatment. If you really, really enjoy red, then go for it.
Red Accent Wall
A great alternative to a fully red room is, of course, an accent wall. Red makes an easy focal point and when paired with a more neutral color, can be both bold and livable. Depending on which wall you paint, you can bring attention to different sides of the room. Below is a classic red and blue scheme with a modern window shade.
To keep the room warm and saturated, how about brown and red? It’s masculine and cozy, but I kept it playful with a bright striped shade.
Lastly, I always love gray! Look how this really draws your attention to the desk wall. Gray is a great neutral background that can stay in the room even when the teen is ready to ditch the red for another color.
This post is a just a quick color study to see what works on the walls. Imagine how else we can transform and personalize the space with wall art, furniture and more organized accessories. Look out soon for Red Hot Part 2!
