Painting a Small Space Bold
One of the biggest fears in home decor is the use of bright and bold colors–and particularly in small spaces. I agree that at times, an overly saturated color can be overwhelming. But, a bold hue with confident accessories can also be energizing and exciting! I loved this submission because it was (1) a bathroom and (2) our reader asked to go bold. In fact, here’s what she wrote:
“I love spanish style but am having a hard time incorporating it in the bathroom. Will bold colors work in a small space?”
Yes! In fact, I’m so excited about this question, that before we get to the virtual makeover, here are few inspirational photos of small spaces with bold colors.
The Makeover
On to our makever, and you’ll see that I took a lot of inspiration from the above photos. The existing bathroom is nice enough. In fact, it’s already painted green, so we already know it looks good with color.
A modern update with a bold Mexican-style palette including deep blue, sea blue, bright pink and red with a splash of yellow. The Marimekko shower curtain really sets the mood with simple, bold graphics. The lines are clean and the accessories simple, so you can get away with rainbow palette that lets color be the star.
I’m always a sucker for yellow, and the Spanish style makes me think of warm, sun-drenched afternoons. Bring in a little pattern with a classy (yet bold!) striped shower curtain. A few accessories like wall shelves and and roman shades keep the bathroom cozy.
I’ve saved the best for last! And by best, I mean the most obvious expression of a Spanish style home. Namely, the accent tiles in deep blues and yellows really make the style statement. I always love the color of terra cotta on the walls. It’s the warmest and friendliest bold color in the mix, while still looking elegant. Lastly, I added a few key accessories like a muted rainbow shower curtain and a Moroccan style lamp (which, also hints at the Moorish style, another piece of Spanish history). Also note the addition of a rich wooden frame around the mirror. It’s an easy DIY upgrade that instantly adds some architectural interest to the bathroom.
I say the sky’s the limit when it comes to painting small spaces. Contrary to popular belief, dark, bold colors do not always shrink and overwhelm a room. Sometimes, they actually help the structural elements of a room pop out, making it feel more complex and thus bigger. Good luck with the Spanish style dream bathroom!
