Decorating Around Existing Wall Color (Part 2)
This month it looks like paint color isn’t the problem, but decorating around it is. Here is the second submission from a reader who wants to keep the existing wall color and simply update their accessories to match. Once again, I commend the nice color choice. Yellow is one of my absolute favorites for a living room. From soft butter to bright sunshine, yellow is warm and inviting without being overpowering. The existing room is clean and simple – and easy canvas for a fresh update.
The existing maroon curtains feel dark, so let’s brighten this room up with a modern ikat makeover. To set the mood, I added this Ogee window panel from West Elm in ivory/straw. I like the dynamic pattern of ikat, but toned down with light neutral colors. Some matching pillows in ikat and jute silk from my favorite source for unique accessories, Etsy. This room could also benefit from some wall art and a focal point accessory for the square coffee table. Lastly, because the couch is a similar tone to the existing carpet, I recommend defining the space a rug, like this low shag from Room & Board.
Yellow can be a great color for creating a little modern drama. Go for a high contrast look with yellow, white, black and gray. I love the idea of doing something unexpected for window coverings. Instead of a heavy curtain, why not pair a patterned shade from Smith+Noble with sheer white panels from Pottery Barn? Continue the drama on the sofas and walls with graphic pillows from Jonathon Adler and a vintage trolley sign from Room & Board. And continue the pattern on the floor with this Code rug from CB2.
Finally, here is a more classic look, in keeping with the softness of the yellow walls. I love a clean classic room as much as a modern room and nothing sets it better than a crisp vertical stripe. I particularly like the slightly formal feel of this curtain with a tailored cornice in Crimson Concord Stripe from Smith+Noble. Continue the classic patterns with a paisley pillow and geometric ribboned pillowed. A classic room definitely calls for a classic rug like this Sophia rug from Restoration Hardware, which looks rather fresh in light yellow and beige tones. I finished it off with a cozy reading lamp and little dramatic sunburst for the wall.
I love this cozy yellow room, as it is an easy upgrade with few simple accessories. Think about big ticket items to really set the look, such as window coverings and rugs. Then, have fun with pillows and other accessories. So easy!
