A Coordinated Color Palette Update
Here is a lovely house in need of a little color boost. The interior is bright and open, with tons of light and nice lines. It’s currently finished in a pleasing neutral scheme, including brown and beige furniture. Our reader would like to liven it up with a fresh color palette. The good news here, is that you can really take this decor in ANY direction. With such solid basics, the sky’s the limit.
Mini-palette: Brown, Yellow, Sage, Beige
My first thought is a yellow and brown theme, to match the existing furniture and accessories. The color inspiration comes from Olympic paint in Calabash, which I paired with a chocolate brown. An aqua/sage striped curtain keeps the room looking modern.
Mini-palette: Teal, Terra cotta, Black
I found more inspiration with Olympic colors Blue Bayberry and Baritone. I love the combination of teal/blue with Terra Cotta. Add a little black and the palette really pops. To bring it all together, add some tall curtains in modern organic print.
Mini-palette: Terra cotta, brown, beige, yellow
Continuing with the Terra cotta, here is Olympic Ginger on the wall. This is warm and spicy, without being dark and oppressive. The Ginger coordinate easily with the the brown and beige of the existing room. I also love the existing throw pillows on the couch with a modern/ethnic rainbow appeal.
Mini-palette: Dark and light green, beige, brown
Lastly, a calm and friendly green in Dark Sage and Asparagus. The combination of muted green with bright green keeps the room lively, but still feels understated and earthy. Simple curtains soften the back wall. Also, note the green paint on the mantel and the back of the bookshelf to highlight the architectural details.

I LOVE the blue room, the third one! I want to paint my living room like this and was wondering if theres a place that has similar curtains to that? I cant find anything like those anywhere! Would love to find something close to that color and pattern!
I snagged these curtains from the Marimekko blog. Sadly, that particular fabric is out of stock/no longer made.
I would suggest looking for other Marimekko or mod-style fabrics, some of which can be found here. They have a lot of fun styles.
I am currently re-doing my home office room, which has a mocha colored sofa. I LOVE the teal colors that you have on here. So, I went to the store to check them out, and they look absolutely nothing like they do in the picture. From the picture I thought I found my colors and now I can’t figure it out.

This is one of the unfortunate limitations of digital design. Even if I have the paint chip in front of me, it likely looks slightly different on my monitor…and different yet again on your monitor…and different still in the lighting of the store versus your room. (I have a headache just thinking about it!) If you can use the color to guide you to the right area of paint chips, I would recommend grabbing a few and taking them into your space. Are the actual paint chips too green or too blue for your taste? Perhaps I can recommend some other options.

Hi Shannon- Well, you know me, I’m not the first person you sohuld ask for decorating advice…but I do have a few ideas from time to time. 1.–I wouldn’t paint the tool tray, I like the natural wear, oil, and overall patina of those types of things. 2.–I would say Yes to painting the dresser here, HOW.EV.ER! I say it with this little note: it only depends on the other pieces in the room. You don’t want too many painted pieces. 3.– I’d definitely paint the wardrobe. It looks heavy and in good shape with good wood– but I think you’d just like it better painted. Especially with the door off. I would even say…for the door, try cutting out the panels in that door and replacing with chicken wire. (that was a freebie–wink-wink) 4- the bench storage. Yes, as well as the shelf above it. My suggestion would be paint the items in 4 and 3…and IF YOU MUST then paint 2. although I’m kind of liking #2 more and more WITHOUT PAINT. Oh, yeah, I’m indecisive too. But you knew that already…LOL! Pat
