Last year, I updated my kitchen with a new backsplash (check out the Kitchen Backsplash Extravaganza for details). This year, we updated our appliances. From a purely aesthetic perspective, the new appliances really lightened up our kitchen. We also replaced the overhead lights and added some under-cabinet lighting. I think the whole effect is very nice! Check it out below.
We have a skylight in the kitchen, so it’s naturally bright. The dark appliances, while not awful, did sort of act like a black hole of color and light in the kitchen. And it was a little too much contrast for the bright white counters.
The stainless steel coordinates nicely with our gray/white backsplash. There is still a bit of black, but the “black hole” effect is gone. Phew! Also, we added some under-cabinet lighting that really adds some depth to the overall kitchen-scape. We purchased this LED under-cabinet lighting kit from InspiredLED that was ridiculously easy to install. The LED lights are so small and light, they attach with adhesive pads and don’t even require screws. Easy!
Black hole, right? There is no definition to these appliances the details of the design (like handles and the water dispenser) just blend in to one big, black blob.
Now I can actually see the refrigerator door handles and the water dispenser. Plus, it matches the cappuccino maker. Bonus!
Lastly, here’s a little Mochi makeover on the kitchen. With the new stainless appliances, I got to thinking that some frosted glass cabinet doors might be really fresh.
Well, maybe some day…
